What is Kids Counselling?
Children are incredible storytellers, but they don’t always use words. When a child is anxious or struggling, they tell us through behaviour—outbursts, withdrawal, or defiance. We act as “emotional interpreters.” We know that kids don’t want to sit and talk; they want to do. We use hands-on learning and art to help them express what they cannot say.
You need an emotional interpreter who not only knows how to identify the problem, but how to address the root causes – or, specifically, the story. Young people are incredible storytellers, but when that story is disruptive or destructive, it can affect his or her ability to move past an event and be in the present.
Carrie incorporates hands on learning with art materials to express feelings and emotions in a visual way. Kids don’t want to talk, they want to do, expressive arts can give your child a voice.
Your child or teen will leave the session with emotionally focused art that they create! Carrie then teaches parents how to use it as a tool to help kids get grounded.
Truth Is: You are a good parent and want to give your child every opportunity. Save yourself years of frustration and take the next step.
The Process: What Occurs in a Session?
-
Visual Expression: Carrie incorporates art materials (paint, clay, collage) to help children express feelings visually. This gives your child a “voice” without the pressure of finding the right words.
-
Creating Tools: Your child will often leave the session with a piece of “emotionally focused art.” This isn’t just a drawing; it is a tool they can use to ground themselves when they feel overwhelmed.
-
Parent Support: We “up-scale” your parenting. We teach you how to interpret your child’s behavior and how to use their art tools at home to help them manage difficult emotions.
Key Benefits:
-
Addresses the root cause of “bad” behavior rather than just punishing it.
-
Reduces anxiety and builds resilience.
-
Strengthens the bond between parent and child.
